Is it true that it’s better to go straight to a four-year school versus the community college route? Why or why not?
-From Exploring Student.
Dear Exploring Student,
Let me begin by stating that one size does not fit all. In other words, the answer to your question really depends on your specific situation. Yes, many school counselors may suggest that the four-year college path is best because it might be the fastest route or most memorable college experience. However, you have to consider your personal circumstances when making the decision. Some things to consider include total financial cost, flexibility to your schedule, college culture and experiences, classroom sizes, motivation factors and overall academic goal.
Community colleges are generally less expensive, typically have smaller classes and can offer more flexibility to your schedule. On the other hand, four-year colleges can provide a more exciting college experience, have a variety of clubs and organizations that offer student motivation and usually have a wider variety of academic choices to choose from. Personally, I decided to attend a four-year college due to my parents financial standing, I knew that financial aid was going to help me pay for it. Also, I felt motivated to finish quicker if I didn’t have to worry about transferring or meeting the requirements of two different schools. But as I previously stated, one size does not fit all.
Before making your decision, I recommend talking to people who have taken both paths and see what their experiences have been. Go to the school website and check out what organization or activities you can be involved with. Overall, doing research based on your own needs is the best way to make your decisions.
Good luck, no matter what path you take!
Dr. Syl.
