Ask Dr. Syl: How Will I Find My Dream Career?

Dr. Syl

Dear Dr. Syl,

What is it that makes you want to go to work every day? How did you learn about your career?

From,

Dear Motivation and Career,

I am sure many of you have heard this before but it is important to love what you do! You do not have to do it forever but you should enjoy the work you do day-to-day.

When college students and college graduates begin gaining work experience, it is likely to find jobs that do not necessarily fit their expectations.  However, these experiences will be beneficial because they provide skill sets that you can build on for the next work experience.  In other words, most of the entry-level jobs will not be ideal but will be helpful for future positions.

As an undergraduate, I worked at multiple nonprofit organizations that really gave me the opportunity to understand nonprofit management.  Although the pay and benefits were not the best, it gave me certain tools that helped me get future positions.  All of these jobs were an important part of my path.  They were also important factors to learning about career options.  If it wasn’t for all of the work experiences I had in the past, I would have never learned about the career I have today.

Today, I continue to work in a non-profit organization at the administrative level and I love what I do.  Although I do not hold my ultimate career goal, my current work is enjoyable, fulfilling and important.  This is what makes me want to go to work every day!!  I like what I do but I also recognize that it is not what I will do forever.

It can be difficult to stay motivated when you are still exploring your career goals but it is also necessary to reach your ultimate goals.

Stay motivated!!! Buena suerte 🙂

Dr. Syl
