4 Style Rules Every Educated Latina Must Follow, pt. 2

Guest Contributor

Welcome to part 2 of the Career Style series! Today, I’ll be giving you the do’s and don’ts of fit and accessories. If you haven’t had a chance to check out this first, go back and read it here.

In this 4 part series, I’m giving you the basic principles of style on which you can build your professional style. A career professional is always thinking big picture and long term. You can apply this to your style when you, “Dress for the Job you want, not the one you have.”

Remember, it is a fact that 55% another’s perception of you is based on how you look” (Via wingsforsuccess.org).

Now, Let’s Get You Ready to Shine!

Adding effort and personal touch through the fit of your clothes and the right accessories is part of what can make you stand out in your next internship or job interview.

Get the Right Fit

The way your clothing fits on you, even your undergarments, is important, if not, you are in danger of ruining any outfit. Imagine your co-worker walking into the office with a beautiful, navy blue blazer. You know she spent some money on it because the material looks expensive. However, when you see her later on that day, you notice, the blazer is too tight. The shoulders are bunched up and when she reaches for the notebook on her desk, she hunches her back, and her arms move mechanically, like a puppet.

However, when you see her later on that day, you notice, the blazer is too tight. The shoulders are bunched up and when she reaches for the notebook on her desk, she hunches her back, and her arms move mechanically, like a puppet. Although, expensive, it was a waste of money.

Here are my tips for fit, when purchasing any item.

Do’s:

  • Find out your unique body shape by measuring your shoulders, bust, waist, hips in (inches) + enter the nearest whole number. These measurements will come in handy.
  • Remember, that clothing companies have items that run in different sizes. Don’t get caught up in the number but the fit of the garment and how it looks on you.
  • Purchase bras and underwear that are appropriate for your body. Although no one can see them, they play a significant role in how your clothes look on you.
  • Find a seamstress that can tailor any piece of clothing to your measurements.

Don’t:

  • Wear oversized or loose clothing.
  • Wear tight clothing like snug skirts, dresses, and tops.
  • Wear low cut tops that show cleavage. That’s office inappropriate.
  • Wear open toe shoes, or
  • bright colors or distracting prints.

and the right Accessories, too

Accessories can make any outfit come to life. You will want to have staple pieces for the office.

Do’s:

  • Wear diamond, rhinestone or pearl stud earrings.
  • Wear small delicate necklaces.
  • Gold, silver, pearls or precious stones.

Don’t wear:

  • Large hoop earrings especially with your name on it.
  • Bulky or heavy necklaces.
  • Brightly colored jewelry.

That’s the end, for now…

In addition to fit and accessories, I want to add that classic pieces like

  • Navy or black blazer
  • White button down shirts
  • Little black dress aka the LBD and a
  • Tailored suit jacket and pants keeping in mind
  • Neutral colors: khaki, beige, navy, white, black and pastels.

You will never go wrong with these basics to start. When in doubt about the company dress code, always look to the senior management for how they dress. If it is still not clear, check the employee manual or with the HR department to clarify. I hope you ladies put these tips into practice,
